For our Fall Field trial this year we packed up and headed west to North Dakota.
Through the legwork of Bill Holtan we were able to secure grounds at the Timm Ranch near Kensal, ND. A huge thank you to Curt and Tanya Timm for hosting us, and providing such wonderful grounds to hold the field trial on.
Third weekend in August can sometimes be a scorcher in North Dakota. We lucked out with cooler than normal temperatures for most of the weekend with some scattered showers. We had secured good flying quail from Dakota Gamebirds in Bismarck. These were supplemented by native sharptail grouse that were found during most braces of the trial.
We had a very nice entry for this three day field trial with professional trainers Greg Dixon, Ray Dohse, Matt Eder, and Kim Trafton taking time away from their summer camps. Professional trainer Mark Smith was on his way home to Wisconsin after this trial. We also had competitive amateurs from North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wyoming, Wisconsin and Illinois (via South Dakota).
I want to say a special thank you to Heath Kooima, Clark Linn, Ian Mactavish, Ray Marshall, and Lance Schulz for agreeing to judge our field trial. They put in some long days in the saddle and their efforts were appreciated by all in attendance.
Friday we ran the Open Limited Gun Dog and Open Puppy stakes. After the day was complete and chores were all done we went into Kensal to the Community Café, where Bill Holtan and his family hosted a spaghetti dinner for us. A freewill offering was donated to the Izaak Holtan Memorial Scholarship fund.
A damp Saturday slowed down the trial but we were still able to complete the 16 brace Open Gun Dog stake. That evening we made trip to Bordulac, ND to have dinner and cocktails at the Bordulac Bar & Grill. This dinner was a way to show our appreciation to the land owners and their family along with our judges, for without their contributions and generosity we wouldn’t be able to have these events.
Sunday we put in a full day and were able to finish the Open Derby and the Amateur Gun Dog stake.
Thank you to everyone that helped in running of the trial. The committee of John Zeman, Chris Benskin, Alex Fredin, Kelly Jarmuzek, and Bruce and Sue Mueller put a lot of work into making this trial run happen and run smoothly. Thank you to Kim Trafton for preparing a delicious BBQ pork lunch for us on Friday. Sue Muller and Andrea Linn made sides and appetizers on Saturday and Sunday for us. Special thank you again to Bill Holtan for all his help, besides all the behind the scenes work, Bill marshalled, planted birds, opened gates and even herded cattle that had wandered on to the course.
We hope to be able to hold a trial here again next August.
This field trial was all non-retrieving and was licensed/sanctioned by the AKC, NGSPA
