The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Minnesota held our
annual Spring Horseback Field Trial over the weekend of May 25-28, 2012 at Crow
Hassan Park Reserve near Rogers, MN
We drew 123 dogs and started 109 over the 6 stakes
offered. The trial was attended by pro
trainer/handlers Art Armbrust and Tim Heiner from Nebraska , Greg Dixon of
Wisconsin and a sizeable contingent from Minnesota including Matt Eder, Tommy
Hagan, Wes Lodes, and Phil Mathiowetz.
The pro entries were also supplemented by a large number of highly
competitive amateurs from throughout the mid-west. Thank you all for your support of our trial.
Thank you to the judges for this year’s event. Kevin Kuiper of Lehigh, IA and Rob Schuster
of Green Bay, WI were the two that drove the furthest. They both judges the Open Limited Gun Dog/Open Restricted Shooting
Dog stake and Kevin also watched over the Open Derby and the Open Gun Dog/Open Shooting Dog. Local field trailers Heather Gast, Denise Koslowski,
and Clark Linn all teamed up to handle the Open All-Age, Open Derby, Open Gun Dog/Open
Shooting Dog and Open Puppy stakes. Greg
and Liz Dixon kindly offered up some of their free time to judge the Amateur Gun Dog/Amateur
Shooting Dog stakes. Judging can be a
long thankless task at times and I
appreciate these individuals giving back to the sport.
Thank you to Mary Reynolds and Loyall Pet Food for their
help with the trial with financial support and bags of food for the stake
I would like to thank all the club members and non-club
members that lent a hand in helping make the trial go smoothly. Carl Olson handled most of the bird planting
duty for the weekend and was spelled by Kevin Jahr, Bruce Mueller, Clark Linn,
and Su Oertel. Dog wagon was driven by
John Zeman on Friday and Monday with Carl Olson’s nephews Terrance and Martin
manning the wagon on Saturday and Sunday.
Chris Benskin cooked all the lunches and dinners with the exception of a
fabulous BBQ meal brought in by Q-Fanatic BBQ of Champlin, MN on Sunday night.
I’m sorry if I forgot anyone and if I did, please know how
grateful I am for you lending a helping hand.
Without dedicated volunteers stepping up this event could happen. I look forward to seeing you all again over
Memorial Day weekend 2013.
